Born and raised in Hong Kong, a very busy, fast paced city, Sylvia moved to Australia in 2010. It was here that she made the life changing decision to learn how to improve her own hip and lower back problems that she experienced due to prolonged sitting postures at work and an extensive history of dancing. While learning to help herself, Sylvia realised she could have a positive impact on other people in pain through soft tissues therapy.
Sylvia first completed her Cert IV and Diploma of Remedial Therapy in 2013 and worked alongside other therapists and health professionals, attending various workshops to further her knowledge. She also worked as part of the massage team at various sporting events including games for the Gold Coast Titans.
The knowledge and skills she obtained benefited her clients and herself tremendously, but she realised just the massage work is not enough to give her clients longer lasting results. Therefore Sylvia undertook her Advanced Diploma of Myotherapy, from which she graduated in 2015, and since then she'd been given more opportunities to work with elite athletes, experiencing trials and challenges and problem solving in a clinical setting which has been equipping her continuously to become more knowledgeable and skillful day by day, and she is still growing.
Sylvia is passionate about her job - helping her clients get back to a pain free, active life as much as possible is what her heart wants.
As a myotherapist, Sylvia works directly with the client. She is especially interested in the management of soft-tissue pain and dysfunction associated with chronic musculoskeletal conditions, in particular around the hip and back.
Choosing to work in the healthcare industry, it has been one of the greatest decisions i have ever made. In the past, i was working in the office where i felt so empty and lost no matter how hard i tried. The sense of competition among the peers, which was not tangible but i knew it was there, or perhaps it was a fear that i built within myself made me feel i needed to be better. The days when i was working in the office, happened to be the time after the Global Financial Crisis, i.e. the starting of redundancy waves happened to many organisations as they were all going through either relocation of plants or downsizing of companies in order to survive the business. And we were all frightened whether if any of our names to be appeared on the next list of redundancy. There was no purpose. The only purpose we had, were to stay on top and hoping that our names not appearing on the redundancy list. And i prayed every morning - that was how desperate i was - as i was living in fear, and not finding satisfactory nor passion in my job, my heart could never be there even if i tried hard.
And then one day in 2010, i moved to Australia, to reunite with my family who have been residing in Gold Coast since 1994. i know if i chose office jobs after moving to Australia, the same old history was going to happen again, like a pattern. Then one day, my mother's client who happened to be the principal of a massage school in Gold Coast, gave me an invitation to study at their school. Since i didn't want to work in office anymore, and i didn't see what job opportunity was available to me other than office work with my Business Degree qualification...So this was how i started my career in healthcare industry. As the more i learnt, the more i found how i could improve my own musculoskeletal problems with the skills i learnt, as well as helping others. So i studied Certificate 4 and then continued into Diploma as i craved for more knowledge. Then worked as a qualified therapist for 2 years and my cravings to know more didn't stop so i completed another advance level. The job nature itself, is very fulfilling and rewarding. It made me want to learn more and to help others better. I hope one day opportunity will be given to study in the field of Physiotherapy or Exercise physiology as i deeply believe moving correctly recruiting muscles correctly can reduce risk of injury. And I spoke based on my own experiences.
